The definitive history on the foundation of the Breed.

The Canine Health Information Center, also known as CHIC, is a centralized canine health database jointly sponsored by the AKC/Canine Health Foundation (AKC/CHF) and the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA).

CHIC, working with participating parent clubs, provides a resource for breeders and owners of purebred dogs to research and maintain information on the health issues prevalent in specific breeds.

A CHIC number is issued when test results are entered into the database satisfying each breed specific requirement, and when the owner of the dog has opted to release the results into the public domain.

The CHIC number itself does not imply normal test results, only that all the required breed specific tests were performed and the results made publicly available.

REQUIREMENTS  FOR CHIC: AMERICAN BG ASSOCIATION

Two tests performed to acquire a CHIC number. Four other health tests are recommended but not required.

REQUIRED:
Eye Clearance
-Cerf evaluation, annually as long as dog is being bred.

Although the Brussels Griffon, like all dogs (purebred & mixed) have their health problems, the Breed does not carry a disease nor genetic faults that can be stated specifically to be 'Griffon related'. As a brachycephalic breed (short-faced), there are certain conditions which may apply to all breeds within that category of dogs, that will be found in the Griffon.

An experienced, educated, responsible breeder and a trusted, open minded veterinarian with knowledge of toy/small dogs in the  brachycephalic family are your Griffon's best friends and advisors.

The American Brussels Griffon Association - the Parent Club for the Breed in the USA - has conducted a survey on the Breed's health.  It can be located on their website by clicking here. For those considering breeding, please read the accompanying Puppy Mortality Study.  The American Kennel Club Health Foundation is an invaluable resource & will provide not only an overview of what issues have  been or are being researched and recorded within the purebred dog community.  To view that site, please click here.

Please click the links below.  They will provide information on the most common health issues that have been noted in the Breed.

The information provided in this column is to be used for "reference only" not for diagnosis or treatment.
